Modern hydraulic oils of group II and III can have a lower Zinc content which reduces the fluid conductivity. Electro-static charging can occur everywhere in a system, but problems arise when the fluid conductivity is too low. In this situation the electro-static energy can accumulate and create discharges in the oil. As varnish can be formed due to thermal and oxidative degradation of the fluid, the discharge of electro-static energy can contribute to this process in a significant manner. Varnish can cause system damage and lowers its productivity due to blocking of flow paths in components like valves and coolers, causing plugging of filters and can result in dangerous situations developing such as contributing to valve malfunction.
